Car diagnostics and warning lights

The short answer

If a warning light comes on, Kay plugs in Snap-on diagnostic equipment, reads the fault codes and then tests the parts behind them before replacing anything. That way you pay to fix the actual fault, such as a failed lambda sensor, rather than for parts thrown at a symptom.

What's included

  • Full fault-code read across engine and vehicle systems
  • Live data checks to confirm the fault before any parts are fitted
  • Engine management, ABS, airbag and battery warning lights
  • Sensor faults, including lambda (oxygen) sensors
  • Electrical faults, fuses and terminal problems
  • Clear explanation of the fault and the options to fix it

Price

Every car is different, so Kay quotes per car. Send your reg and you get a clear price before any work starts.

How it works

  1. 1

    Tell us the symptoms

Which light, when it came on, and anything you have noticed: noises, smells, loss of power.

  2. 2

    Scan

Kay reads every stored fault code with Snap-on equipment.

  3. 3

    Test

The suspect parts and wiring are tested, so the fault is confirmed before any parts are ordered.

  4. 4

    Fix and clear

You approve the repair, Kay fixes it, clears the codes and re-tests.

Diagnostics & warning lights: questions

Is it safe to drive with the engine management light on?

A steady amber light usually means a fault that needs checking soon, but you can normally drive carefully to a garage. A flashing light or a red warning means stop as soon as it is safe, because continuing could damage the engine or catalytic converter. If you are unsure, call Kay first.

Can a code reader tell me exactly what is wrong?

Not on its own. A fault code points to the circuit or system that reported a problem, not always the failed part. Kay uses Snap-on equipment with live data and then tests the components, so a lambda sensor code caused by a wiring fault does not end with an unnecessary new sensor.

Do you clear warning lights without fixing the fault?

No. Clearing a code without fixing the cause just means the light comes back, and on some faults it hides a safety issue. Kay finds the cause, explains it, and only clears the codes after the repair has been made and the system re-tested.
