Tyres & wheels: questions
What is the legal minimum tyre tread depth in the UK?
The legal minimum for cars is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread, all the way around the tyre. Each illegal tyre can bring a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points. Most experts suggest replacing tyres at around 3mm, because stopping distances in the wet get noticeably longer.
Can a punctured tyre be repaired?
Often, yes. A puncture in the central part of the tread can usually be repaired safely if the hole is small and the tyre has not been driven on flat. Damage to the sidewall or shoulder, or a tyre driven on while flat, usually means replacement. Kay will check and tell you which.
Why are my tyres wearing unevenly?
Uneven wear usually comes from wheel misalignment, worn suspension parts or incorrect tyre pressures. Wear on one edge often points to alignment, while wear in the centre or on both edges suggests over or under-inflation. Kay checks the cause so your new tyres do not wear out the same way.
